O tempora is a series of retrospective posts where I play games from ages before to see if they stood the test of time.

Geez, when was the last time I played Metal Gear Solid?.. It’s been at least 20 years. This is a bit strange, because out of the entire franchise, I always had the warmest feelings towards the first two MGS entries. Apart from MGR: Revengeance, of course. Last time I’ve played MGS1 was with the interesting but flawed PC port of the game that is still available on GOG… but I’ll speak on the different versions of the game later. The main reason I’ve decided that it was finally time to replay a classic was the release of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1. Yes, it has been released back in 2023, but the original release was highly flawed, so I’ve waited for some time for it to get patched and it seems like the game included in it are at their potential best by this point. So it was time. And Metal Gear Solid, originally released in 1998, is still really cool but also far more flawed then I have remembered.

О часи — серія записів присвяченим іграм з минулого, в яких я намагаюся вирішити чи пройшли вони перевірку часом.

Боги, коли я останній раз проходив Metal Gear Solid?.. Років 20 точно минуло. Що дивно, бо з усієї серії я завжди найбільше згадую перші дві частини MGS. Ну і MGR: Revengeance, звичайно. Останнє моє проходження MGS1 було з використанням не найкращого старого порту на ПК, який зараз можна придбати на GOG… але про різні версії гри я пізніше напишу. Бо головною причиною для цього проходження став вихід Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1. Ця колекція вийшла ще в 2023-ому, але довгий час у неї була купа проблем, тому я чекав, поки для неї вийдуть оновлення. І на сьогодні краще версії за існуючу вже, скоріш за все, не зроблять, тому я сів проходити Metal Gear Solid знову. Гру, яка вийшла в 1998-ому і яка з часом стала відчутно гірше, ніж я сподівався.

O tempora: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered

O tempora is a series of retrospective posts where I play games from ages before to see if they stood the test of time.

Legacy of Kain has been one of the most important franchises for me personally. While it has not been a series I replayed very often, unlike a lot of survival horror classics, it has remained a benchmark of worldbuilding, character writing and storytelling. The incredible work Silicon Knights did when creating the world of Nosgoth for Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain still holds up. As do the stunning writing and cutscene direction of Amy Hennig and her team with later entries, as Crystal Dynamics became the owners of the franchise. There has been only one dud in the main series (Blood Omen 2), and even that game had its moments. Franchise consistently had incredible music, some of the best voice acting in games and one of the most cleverly written storylines… That to this day remains unfinished. Legacy of Kain: Defiance, the final “proper” entry in the series was released in 2003 and was an ending, but not the ending to the incredible tale started in 1996. And since then only cancelled projects, including some incredibly misguided ones, followed. By now, with almost all of the original team spread across the industry (or sadly not among the living) getting a sequel is not just unlikely but may even be preferable. The industry is too different and Legacy of Kain requires a strong vision and choices that development studios and especially publishers would simply not risk to make.

So, given that getting no future games in this wonderful franchise might be the best outcome possible, let’s look at its past with the recently released Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered.

О часи — серія записів присвяченим іграм з минулого, в яких я намагаюся вирішити чи пройшли вони перевірку часом.

Ігрова серія Legacy of Kain для мене дуже важлива. Хоча я в цілому набагато частіше заново граю в класичні survival horror ігри, а не в ігри LoK, я продовжую вважати їх основними стандартами для того, як створювати світ, писати персонажів та розповідати сюжет. Silicon Knights зробили неймовірну роботу, створивши світ Носготу для Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. А коли права на серію перейшли Crystal Dynamics, то робота Емі Хенніг на позиції сценаристки та режисера, підняли оповідання цієї серії на новий рівень. Навіть єдина дійсно слабка частина основної серії (Blood Omen 2) має прикольні елементи. Музика тут неперевершена, озвучення персонажів – краще ніж величезна кількість сучасних ігор. А сценарій кожної частини написаний так захопливо, що постійно хочеться дізнатись, що буде далі… На жаль, остання “повноцінна” частина серії – Legacy of Kain: Defiance, яка вийшла в 2003-ому, – закінчила лише частину цього сюжету. Але повного завершення саги, яка почалась в 1996-ому ми так і не отримали. Після купи закритих незакінчених проектів, включаючи дуже дивні, після того, як більша частина розробників серії розійшлась по іншим студіям (або, на жаль, померли) шанси на нову частину серії неймовірно малі. Більш того, можливо навіть краще, якщо її не буде. Сучасний ігровий ринок занадто сильно змінився. Розробники не потягнуть, а видавці не підуть на ризики.

Ну а раз відсутність нових частин може бути найкращим варіантом для серії, то варто подивитись в минуле. За допомогою Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered.

In love with: Slitterhead

Right from its initial announcement, Slitterhead was promising to be something special. The first title from a new studio formed by some of the key personnel who previously headed the original Silent Hill, the Siren series and Gravity Rush series had very little chance of being a “typical” game. I expected it to be at least a little bit jank and sometimes frustrating – and it is, – but I also expected to be amazed and excited. And I was. So while I can safely assume, Slitterhead might not “click” with a large amount of players, it is something to be experienced nonetheless.

Ще з анонсу Slitterhead я очікував від гри приємних сюрпризів. Це перший проект студії, яку сформували деякі з ключових членів команди, які до цього працювали над першим Silent Hill, та серіями Siren і Gravity Rush, тому “типовою” гра не могла бути. Знаючи ці проекти, я також очікував, що гра буде трохи корява і дратуюча, в чому виявився правим. Але також я очікував, що гра мене вразить. І з цим розробники теж впорались. Slitterhead багато кому може здатись занадто “дивною” грою, але пограти в неї в будь-якому випадку варто.

Happy about: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Back in 2009 MachineGames was formed by people who decided to leave Starbreeze Studios after completing work on The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena – a good expanded version of the already fantastic Escape from Butcher Bay they’ve worked on 5 years prior. The title, that remains one of the best examples of a movie license game, was an incredible mix of different genres and somewhat of an “immersive sim-lite” and managed to perfectly replicate the mood and the style of Riddick movies in an interactive form. However, as MachineGames they’ve worked on titles that were a bit more conventional. While Wolfenstein: The New Order (and The Old Blood to a degree) had its share of curious and unorthodox decisions for an FPS game, it was still a more or less straightforward FPS. While Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Wolfenstein: Youngblood were showing them going an even more conventional and boring route, including a lot of very generic live service and looter shooter elements into the game.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was meant to be different. An unofficial return to the ideas of Riddick and The Darkness, of sorts. And while it doesn’t stick the landing, it mostly gets there.

В уже далекому 2009-ому студія MachineGames була створена командою людей, які покинули Starbreeze Studios після закінчення роботи над The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena – чудового доповненого видання неймовірної Escape from Butcher Bay, яку вони випустили за 5 років до того. Гра залишається одним з найкращих прикладів “гри по кіно ліцензії” та вмістила в собі купу різноманітних жанрів і працювала як трохи спрощена immersive sim гра. Яка при цьому ще й ідеально відтворювала настрій фільмів про Ріддіка, але в інтерактивному форматі. Але як студія MachineGames, команда працювала над більш “звичайними” проектами. І хоча Wolfenstein: The New Order (і трохи The Old Blood) мала купу неординарних рішень, як для FPS, вона все одно доволі чітко слідувала канонам жанру. Тоді як Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus та Wolfenstein: Youngblood виявились ще більш нецікавими проектами, які при цьому ще й купу “популярних” для ринку елементів мали, типу live service підходу.

З Indiana Jones and the Great Circle вони пішли іншим шляхом. Це неофіційне повернення до ґеймплейних основ Riddick та The Darkness, яке майже працює. Але робить багато помилок.

When I first saw videos on The Plucky Squire my thoughts were that it looked curious, but the game risked being way too average to be interesting… Yeah, it is, unfortunately, very average and not particularly interesting.
