O tempora: Final Fantasy III (Pixel Remaster)

O tempora is a series of retrospective posts where I play games from ages before to see if they stood the test of time.

Of the three NES Final Fantasy titles that I tried playing years ago, FF3 was the one that get me hooked. I still dropped it at around a quarter of the story in, but I was planning to return someday. I even gave the 3D Remake version of the game a chance, even though I really disliked the style and approach to those DS Remakes. But it wasn’t until now that I’ve finally finished Final Fantasy III. And I really liked it.

О времена — серия ретроспективных записей, в которых я прохожу игры из другого времени и проверяю, прошли ли они испытание временем.

Из трех оригинальных частей Final Fantasy для NES в которые я играл раньше, FF3 меня затянула больше всего. Её я тоже не прошел до конца, но надеялся со временем вернуться. Даже в 3D Римейк игры пробовал играть, но как и с другими версиями серии для DS мне очень не понравился стиль и перемены. Но вот наконец я прошел Final Fantasy III. И она мне очень понравилась.

While my attempts to play the original Final Fantasy usually failed because of how hard and outdated it was, while also having a really simple story, Final Fantasy II in addition to the difficulty and chunkiness was also really weird. All of my attempts quickly hit a wall and every time I’ve tried to check on some guides to help me start, I’d read about some bizarre but seemingly necessary tricks where you’d grind for a few hours by hitting your own party members. With the Pixel Remaster version I was finally able to give the game a proper look and appreciate what it tried to be. Even though it still has some questionable decisions.

О времена — серия ретроспективных записей, в которых я прохожу игры из другого времени и проверяю, прошли ли они испытание временем.

Если мои попытки пройти первую Final Fantasy обычно заканчивались потому, что игра была сложной и устаревшей, а история слишком простой, то в случае с Final Fantasy II к вопросам сложности и неудобств добавлялась ещё и странность основного дизайна игры. Я начинал играть, понимал, что процесс идёт плохо, читал советы по старту игры, удивлялся тому, что там пишут. Бить своих же членов команды в случайных битвах пару часов? Серьёзно?.. С Pixel Remaster версией я наконец смог пройти игру до конца и понять все задумки, которые игра пробовала реализовать.

Happy about: The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

After the first two entries in The Dark Pictures Anthology I was skeptical, but still hopeful about the whole concept. Sure, I don’t particularly like games which heavily rely on QTEs, but that wasn’t my problem with the first games. Rather, they suffered from poor narrative and storytelling decisions, which is pretty important in an “interactive movie”-type game. I’m happy to say that third time’s a charm and House of Ashes is a genuinely entertaining horror themed interactive story.

Первые две части серии The Dark Pictures Anthology были так себе, но идея антологии мне всё равно нравилась. Да, игры с акцентом на QTE мне обычно не нравятся, но не в этом была главная проблема прошлых проектов – они расстраивали повествованием, а не геймплеем. А без хорошего повествования нет хорошего “интерактивного кино”. Но вот к третьей попытке у студии получилось, и House of Ashes – хорошее сюжетное хоррор приключение.

Thoughts on: Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

Well, this is it. Now I’ve played all of the main Yakuza game available as of now. All of them are on PC and all of the ports are solid. Was the final entry in the series (prior to refocusing the story and gameplay in Like a Dragon) good? It was fine. I enjoyed it more than 5, honestly.

Ну вот. Я прошел все основные игры серии Yakuza, которые сейчас доступны. И все они теперь доступны на ПК, и все порты хорошие. Была ли последняя часть (до смены основной истории и геймплея в Like a Dragon) хорошей? Нормальной. Лично мне понравилось больше, чем 5.

With the first game in the Anthology out of the way, I was curious if Little Hope is going to be any better. I still liked the concept, after all, and the fact that every story can be completely separate was promising. Overall, I liked Little Hope far more. Yet, I feel, not everyone will feel the same.

После посредственной первой игры Антологии, мне было интересно глянуть, какой получится Little Hope. Задумка оставалась интересной и то, что все истории были отдельными, могло пойти серии на пользу. В итоге, Little Hope мне понравилась больше. Но со мной могут не согласиться.
