Happy about: Devil May Cry HD Collection and 4: Special Edition

I remember learning about Devil May Cry back when I only had a PS1 of my own and waiting for the next Resident Evil. Code Veronica X on PS2 was originally released with the demo disc of DMC and I’ve seen many a fan of RE later say that that demo disc was the best thing about their purchase. Originally planned as the next entry in Resident Evil franchise (you can even see Umbrella logo in some of the old concept art) and highly influenced by Onimusha and Hideki Kamiya’s love for over the top stylish action concepts, this hack and slash action title created something of a genre of it’s own, sometimes called “stylish action” or “character action”. And while it evolved so much with fans eagerly awaiting whatever next game PlatinumGames (comprised of a lot of old Capcom employees who worked on DMC) are going to release, it’s interesting to go to the beginning and see how the genre defining franchise evolved.

Впервые я услышал про Devil May Cry когда у меня самого появилась PS1 и я ждал, каким станет следующий Resident Evil. Code Veronica X на PS2 была изначально выпущена с демо диском DMC и я видел немало отзывов от фанатов RE, которые писали, что демо диск оказался лучше игры которую они покупали. Изначально задуманная как следующая часть серии Resident Evil (в концептах даже можно увидеть лого корпорации Umbrella) и полная идей из Onimusha и любви Хидеки Камия к невероятному стильному экшену, эта hack and slash action игра создала свой жанр, который порой называют “стильный экшен” (stylish action) или “character action”. И хоть жанр с тех пор развивался очень быстро, и фанаты сейчас ожидают новых релизов от PlatinumGames (которая состоит из многих бывших работников Capcom, которые работали над DMC), мне было интересно взглянуть на то, как жанр появился и как серия развивалась с каждой последующей частью.

In just 4 years I went from “What’s Ys?” to being a huge fan of these action RPG series by Nihon Falcom that is finally starting to get proper recognition outside of Japan. I didn’t like all games I’ve played so far equally. Origin and the story arc it preludes (covered in I & II) used to be my favorite – it had the perfect version of the gameplay mechanics that the series had in mid-00s, it had really interesting memorable story with good characters and it was quite short and to the point, covering every important and exciting aspect of itself in the best possible way. And I wasn’t super keen on the new gameplay ideas introduced in Ys Seven, the template currently used by the series, so I was a bit cautious about VIII (and still is about IV, which I will play later this year when it’s ported to PC).

Now, some of my concerns and fears were justified. But Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA might be my favorite Ys game so far and one of the best examples of action RPGs I’ve ever seen, both mechanically and narratively.

Всего за 4 года моё отношение к серии Ys поменялось от “что это вообще?” к “одна из моих самых любимых серий”. Но не все игры этой серии action RPG от Nihon Falcom мне понравились одинаково сильно, пускай я и рад, что серия наконец набирает популярность за пределами Японии. Например, Origin и сюжетная арка приквелом к которой она является (в I & II) была моей любимой игрой серии – идеальная версия игровых механик серии середины 00-ых, запоминающиеся персонажи и интересная история, и достаточно краткое но емкое время игры. И мне не сильно понравились нововведения в механиках, которые произошли в Ys Seven, нововведения, которые используются и в восьмой части (и в IV, которую я ещё не проходил, но которая выйдет скоро на ПК).

Некоторые из моих страхов не были зря. Но тем не менее, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA теперь стала моей любимой частью серии Ys. И плюс к этому, одной из самых лучших action RPG в которые мне доводилось играть, как в плане механик, так и в плане сюжета.

Ninja Theory заработали репутацию авторов игр, которые хороши – обычно немного слабые с точки зрения механик, но запоминающиеся и хорошие с точки зрения историй и повествования. С одним большим исключением в виде DmC: Devil May Cry, где всё было наоборот – очень хороший (пускай и слабее прошлых DMC) геймплей, но невероятно идиотские история и сценарий. С Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, их первой полностью независимой игрой, вырисовывалась уникальная картина ещё с анонса. И я рад сказать, что игра получилась незабываемая.

Скажу честно. Я не планировал отдельно писать про это DLC после его анонса. Я как раз пытаюсь доделать очередной “мысли про несколько игр” пост и хотел добавить мысли туда. Но… Черт подери, Йоко Таро. Черт тебя подери.

I gotta be honest with you. I didn’t expect to write about this DLC separately when it was announced. I’m preparing another “thoughts on several games” post and wanted to put it there, but… Goddamn, Yoko Taro. Goddamn.

Меня интересовали проекты Йоко Таро очень давно… хоть до этого я не прошел ни единой его игры. Я пробовал поиграть в Drakengard, очень давно, но геймплей мне показался слишком корявым, поэтому я не познал на своём опыте волшебство постоянно обновляемой истории, в которой с каждым прохождением открываются новые сюжетные ответвления. Я пробовал играть в NieR, но у меня не хватило времени и желания его закончить, потому что как игра она мне показалась скучной. Поэтому, я не узнал на практике, каким гениальным там был полный переворот истории с ног на голову при втором прохождении, просто от того, что игроку становилась ясна противоположная сторона конфликта. Но я прочитал об этих играх всё что можно, посмотрел всё что можно. Потому что в них было что-то… необычное. Что-то захватывающее и редко встречающееся в играх. Совершенно другой подход к повествованию, отсутствие страха затрагивать “рискованные” темы или утомлять игрока.

Так что, не преуменьшая заслуг Cavia или (в плане Drakengard 3) Access Games, я очень рад, что именно PlatinumGames выбрали партнёром Йоко Таро для работы над NieR: Automata. Мне сложно представить, какой другой разработчик бы настолько хорошо вписался в эту роль.

I’ve been interested in Yoko Taro’s work for a while… despite not actually finishing any of his games until now. I gave Drakengard an honest try a while ago and the gameplay felt a bit too rubbish, so I didn’t get to experience the amazing concept of constantly updating story as you unlock more and more story paths after you finish the game once. I gave NieR an honest try, but didn’t have time or desire to finish it because, as a game, it felt pretty boring. So I didn’t get to experience the amazing concept of the story of the whole game being pretty much turned upside down on the second playthrough, just on the basis of you now understanding the opposite side of the conflict. But I read it all, watched it all. Because it felt like something not a lot of games try to do. A different approach to storytelling, lack of fear in exploring risky topics or “boring” the player.

So, without trying to downplay the work of Cavia or (for Drakengard 3) Access Games, I’m incredibly happy that PlatinumGames were selected to partner with Yoko Taro to work on NieR: Automata. I cannot think of a better choice of developer.

DmC: Devil May Cry. Anger versus cockiness

When I first heard about Capcom developing a game based on Divine Comedy where Dante Alighieri is making mincemeat out of demons I rolled my eyes. “This is so stupid, why would anyone want this?” Then the demo of this weird game that was to be called Devil May Cry was added as a bonus to the PS2 release of the new entry in the super popular (and much loved by me) Resident Evil series – the Code Veronica X. I still remember the longstanding joke that most people who got that version spent more time playing the DMC demo than RE: CVX itself. The game became a forerunner for a new genre of action.

When DmC: Devil May Cry was announced people started rolling their eyes and hitting tables with their heads for more or less similar reasons. And yet, just like the last time, the results are pleasantly surprising.
