Over the years there have been plenty of Sherlock Holmes media, some of which attempted to be closer to the original works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and some tried to reinterpret the famous character. Having been a fan of the books since my childhood and lucky enough to have worked on two games based on the character as an adult, The Beekeeper’s Picnic – A Sherlockian Adventure caught my attention as a seemingly “wholesome” approach to the character, set during his retirement days. And now having played it – it really is very nice.

Існує величезна кількість творів про Шерлока Голмса, деякі з яких намагаються повторити стиль та атмосферу оригінальних творів сера Артура Конан Дойла, а деякі роблять щось зовсім нове. Я дуже любив оригінальні книги з дитинства і мав нагоду працювати над розробкою двох проектів про персонажа в дорослому віці, тому мене зацікавила The Beekeeper’s Picnic – A Sherlockian Adventure. Це дуже мила пригодницька гра про більш мирні роки життя персонажа, після того, як він пішов у відставку. І вона дуже прикольна.

Revisiting the books about Sherlock Holmes

Of all the ways I liked to entertain myself as a kid, the one that I chose most was reading. I read a lot. And I really liked adventure novels, so having full book collections of sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne and the like was a blessing (they were all Russian translations, of course). And, well, of all the famous book characters, Sherlock Holmes was one of my biggest heroes. I read all of those novels and collections of short stories on Holmes so many times… Yet, until last year, I never actually revisited them since I was, probably, 13.

Oftentimes, revisiting things that you liked as a kid leads to disappointment. But, there was so much stuff written on Holmes, that I knew that somewhere there could still be at least one short story I would still enjoy today. Luckily, I liked far more than that.

Disapprove: Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter

So, last time I told you how great the Crimes and Punishments is, how Frogwares have created not just the best game they ever made, not just the best Sherlock Holmes game, but one of the best examples of adventure games in recent history, if not of all time. For some reason, 2 years later they followed up with The Devil’s Daughter, which isn’t the worst game in their Sherlock Holmes series, but is very close to being one.

В прошлый раз я рассказал о том, насколько хороша Crimes and Punishments, и насколько Frogwares не просто превзошли себя, но и создали лучшую игру про Шерлока Холмса, и один из лучших примеров приключенческих игр последних лет, если не за всё время. По какой-то причине, через 2 года они выпустили The Devil’s Daughter, которая если и не является их худшей игрой про Шерлока Холмса, но вполне на это претендует.

It took me much longer to finally get to Frogwares’ now not even latest Sherlock Holmes game than I anticipated. I actually bought it back in Warsaw 2 years ago, but had to ask Steam to remove it from my account, because it was a region locked Polish and Russian version or something along the lines. Still have the box, though, which contained the full walkthrough (which I didn’t use, however). And after finally finishing the game my first thought was – damn, I wish I had played the game earlier.

Я наконец сыграл в, теперь даже не последнюю, игру Frogwares про Шерлока Холмса. Намного позже, чем планировал. На самом деле, я даже купил игру 2 года назад в Варшаве, но должен был обратить в поддержку Steam, чтобы её убрали из моего аккаунта, так как это была регионально ограниченная версия, в которой были только некоторые языки (польский и русский, или что-то типа того). Хоть у меня всё ещё есть коробка, к которой прилагалась книжечка с полным прохождением (которым я не воспользовался). И после прохождения моей первой мыслью было – блин, зря я раньше в эту игру не поиграл.
