Few thoughts on: Itchy Tasty: An Unofficial History of Resident Evil

As a lot of people reading me for a while might know, I’m a huge fan of Resident Evil. And if you’ve been around the gaming internet since the early 00s, you’ve probably used the GameFAQs for the guides and walkthroughs. If you were looking at Resident Evil and RE-related guides and walkthroughs on that site back in the day you would undoubtedly stumble upon fantastic ones by one “cvxfreak”. So when I’ve learned that Alex Aniel (real name of the author) was now living in Japan and interviewing a lot of Resident Evil series developers for a book about the history of the franchise, I got quite intrigued. After several years of teasers and successful crowdfunding campaign on Unbound the book came out half a year ago. Finally, partially “thanks” to Russian terrorist missile strikes and blackouts they caused, I’ve had some time to read the book. It’s neat!

Ті хто мене давно читає знають, що я обожнюю Resident Evil. І якщо ви тусили в ігровому інтернеті на початку 00-их, скоріш за все хоча б інколи користувались проходилками з GameFAQs. І якщо вам були потрібні гайди по Resident Evil або схожим іграм, скоріш за все ви натикались на чудові проходилки від “cvxfreak”. Коли я дізнався що Алекс Аніел (Alex Aniel – справжнє ім’я cvxfreak’а) тепер жив в Японії і брав інтерв’ю у розробників різних ігор серії Resident Evil збираючи матеріал для своєї книги, мені стало дуже цікаво побачити що з цього вийде. Півтори роки тому, після декількох років згадувань проекту та успішної краудфандинг кампанії на Unbound, книжка нарешті вийшла. І я нарешті, частково завдяки російським терористичним атакам по нашій енергосистемі, знайшов час її прочитати. Вона прикольна!

I had relatively high hopes for the music in games of last year, but it ended up being a bit disappointing. Which, I suppose, is par for the course for 2020. But some remasters and re-releases have sweetened the deal, while the rest of the games that I have played since the last time I did this sort of post have improved the situation even further. As a result, I did get to enjoy some nice memorable videogame tunes during this past year.

У меня были большие надежды на музыку прошлогодних игр, но результат оказался немного разочаровывающим. Как и весь 2020-ый год. К счастью, переиздания и ремастеры прошлого года улучшили ситуацию, а прохождение более старых игр с хорошей музыкой подняли мне настроение. Так что, хорошей музыки для этой записи у меня достаточно.

Revisiting the books about Sherlock Holmes

Of all the ways I liked to entertain myself as a kid, the one that I chose most was reading. I read a lot. And I really liked adventure novels, so having full book collections of sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne and the like was a blessing (they were all Russian translations, of course). And, well, of all the famous book characters, Sherlock Holmes was one of my biggest heroes. I read all of those novels and collections of short stories on Holmes so many times… Yet, until last year, I never actually revisited them since I was, probably, 13.

Often times, revisiting things that you liked as a kid leads to disappointment. But, there was so much stuff written on Holmes, that I knew that somewhere there could still be at least one short story I would still enjoy today. Luckily, I liked far more than that.

Из всех занятий и способов себя развлекать в детстве больше всего я любил читать. Читал я много, и зачастую какие-то приключенческие книги и рассказы. Поэтому я был безумно рад нашей домашней коллекции книг Конан Дойля, Жюль Верна и подобных авторов. И из вообще всех известных книжных персонажей Шерлок Холмс был одним из моих главных героев. Я даже не помню, сколько раз я перечитывал истории про него… Но потом, лет к 13, я стал чаще читать что-то новое и до прошлого года к этим книгам не возвращался.

Обычно возвращаясь к вещам, которые в детстве безумно нравились, заранее готовишься разочароваться. Но я ожидал что среди всего огромного списка приключений Холмса найдётся хоть одна история, которая даже сегодня мне понравится. Мне понравилось намного больше.

It’s a bit of a shame, but 2019 didn’t seem to be as standout in terms of videogame music to me as I was hoping it would be. Still, there were some amazing tunes that need to be mentioned and given their due. As usual, I’m not covering the music to the titles I’ve not played and don’t know much about, but will mention several soundtracks to games that I’ve not yet played but plan to when I have more time. I know, you know, everybody everyone let’s go.

К сожалению, 2019-ый получился не сильно запоминающимся в плане игровой музыки. Но есть несколько отличных саундтреков на которые хотелось бы обратить внимание. Как обычно, я не буду писать про игры в которые не играл и о которых почти ничего не знаю, но игры, в которые я планирую играть когда время появится я упомяну, если я с ними уже ознакомился. Всё так просто, всё так сложно.
