Since the game market used to be a wild west in Ukraine in the 90s-early00s, we had a lot of pirated and bootleg copies of games. Some were exact copies of the original with a tweaked cover art. Some had unofficial translations, often times breaking puzzles or turning text dialogue into a hilarious mess. And some were changed in more drastic ways, containing complete rewrites of the story. With the teams responsible coming from mostly Russia or Ukraine.
I’ve already made videos of some of those translations done by “professional actors”, as the cover often claimed. But after one twitter thread, I’ve realized that I can also share some of the weird looking covers that we got over here. I don’t have that many left, sadly, as I got rid of most of those releases as soon as the “proper” versions of games became available legally. But the ones I still have for whatever sentimental reason, I can share.
You can download the very high resolution versions of the art via links provided under the art.
Silent Hill
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Warcraft II
Resident Evil
The important part is art from Code Veronica and screenshots from RE2. But here’s the back cover text.
For four years a secluded mansion and its outskirts were used for secret biotechnological experiments.
These experiments were funded by a respected corporation.
With each day the reports from the laboratory became more a more vague until they stopped completely.
Recent bloody attacks in the outskirts of the mansion breed rumors about otherworldly predators living near the mansion.
Everything hints that the experiments lead to undesired consequences…
– Extremely fast, realistic, bloody 3D action with the elements of a puzzle-horror. Full 3D.
– Photorealistic visuals.
– Varied weapons.
– Nightmarish soundtrack.
– Full and meticulous translation of all voices, messages, text and interface in the game. (ed. It is meticulous alright).
